The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu Jie, is one of China's four major traditional festivals, celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. Its origins trace back thousands of years to ancient rituals honoring the dragon totem and warding off disease during the summer season. Over time, the festival became intertwined with the legendary story of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet of the Warring States period who drowned himself in protest against corruption. His enduring legacy of loyalty and devotion has given the festival a profound cultural and emotional significance that remains alive to this day.
In 2008, the Dragon Boat Festival was officially recognized as a national public holiday in China, and in 2009, it became the first Chinese festival to be inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Timeless traditions – enjoying zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), racing dragon boats, and hanging mugwort at doorsteps – are not only cherished customs passed down through generations but also powerful symbols of health, good fortune, and shared cultural identity.
